Definition of 'Traps'

Traps are fishing gear in which target animals enter baited or non-baited container from which they cannot escape. Pots are baskets or cages that are placed in multiple sets usually on the sea floor but sometimes in open water with their location marked by surface buoys. Target species are crustaceans and mollusks. Barriers, fences, weirs, pound, stow, and fyke nets all capture fish that are directed by currents or corrals into trapping nets. Aerial traps are used to capture flying or gliding fish and may take the form of boxes, nets, rafts, or boats.
